Change the configuration set assigned to OpenTelemetry Collectors

Assign a different configuration set to one or more OpenTelemetry Collector agents when you want those agents to receive a different remote configuration.

Before you change a configuration set assignment, make sure that the following conditions are met:

  • OTel Collectors management is enabled in Splunk Enterprise.
  • A new or replacement configuration set exists for the desired collector configuration.
  • The OTel Collector agents report the AcceptsRemoteConfig capability.
  • To report remote configuration status, the OTel Collector agents also report the ReportsRemoteConfig capability.

Configuration sets are not edited in place. To change the desired configuration for assigned collectors, create a configuration set or replace an existing configuration set, and then move the collector assignments to the new set. If the new or replacement set already exists, use this task to assign collectors to that set.

When the collector checks in, agent management sends the new assignment through OpAMP. The assigned configuration set is the desired configuration that agent management sends to the collector.

CAUTION: Before you assign a different configuration set, verify that its files do not contain secrets that require storage protection. For storage details and secret-handling options, see Remote configuration of OpenTelemetry Collectors in Splunk Enterprise.
  1. Log in to Splunk Enterprise, select the settings icon (Settings), and then, under the Distributed Environment section, select Agent management.
  2. From the left menu, select the OTel Collectors view.
  3. Select the OTel Collectors tab.
    To narrow the list of collectors, use the table filters.
  4. Select one or more OTel Collector agents that you want to assign to a different configuration set.
  5. From Actions, select Assign Configuration Set.
  6. In the Assign Configuration Set window, select a configuration set from the Configuration Set list.
  7. Select Assign.
    The Agent Management - OTel Collectors page opens. The Configuration Set column shows the new configuration set name, and the Remote Config Status column shows the delivery status.

The selected OTel Collector agents have the new configuration set assigned. The collectors receive the new assignment after their next OpAMP check-in.
