Replace a configuration set for OpenTelemetry Collectors

Replace a configuration set to create a new named configuration set and move the existing OpenTelemetry Collector assignments to it.

Before you replace a configuration set, make sure that the following conditions are met:

  • OTel Collectors management is enabled in Splunk Enterprise.
  • The configuration set exists and it is assigned to one or more collectors.
  • You have the replacement OTel Collector configuration ready to upload as one or more files.

Configuration sets are not edited in place. After you add configuration files to a configuration set, you cannot edit the file contents in agent management. To change a file, replace the configuration set and upload changed files. To change the name, description, or uploaded files for a configuration set, replace the configuration set.

Replacing a configuration set creates a new configuration set. You must enter a new name for the replacement. Agent management moves the existing collector assignments from the old set to the replacement set. The old configuration set stays in the list but is no longer assigned to collectors.

CAUTION: Before you upload replacement configuration files, verify that the files do not contain secrets that require storage protection. For storage details and secret-handling options, see Remote configuration of OpenTelemetry Collectors in Splunk Enterprise.
  1. Log in to Splunk Enterprise, select the settings icon (Settings), and then, under the Distributed Environment section, select Agent management.
  2. From the left menu, select the OTel Collectors view.
  3. Select the Configuration Sets tab.
To narrow the list of configuration sets, filter by name or deployment status.
  4. Select the configuration set that you want to replace.
The configuration set details page opens.
  5. Select Actions > Replace.
  6. In the Replace Configuration Set window, enter a new name in the Name field.
  7. (Optional) Update the Description field.
  8. Upload one or more different OTel Collector configuration files.
Upload all files that belong to the replacement desired configuration. Files can be in any format, but agent management previews file contents only for files that contain valid UTF-8 encoding (for example YAML files). Each assigned collector receives all files in the replacement configuration set.
    Note:
Configuration sets have the following limits:
    • The total raw body size across all files in one configuration set can't exceed 2 MiB (2,097,152 bytes). This limit applies to the whole configuration set, not to each uploaded file.
    • One configuration set can contain up to 1000 files.
    • The configuration set name can be up to 2 MiB.
    • The configuration set description can be up to 2 MiB.
    • Each uploaded file name can be up to 8 KiB (8192 bytes).
  9. Confirm the replacement.

A replacement configuration set is created with the new name. The OTel Collector agents that were assigned to the old configuration set are moved to the replacement configuration set, and agent management sends the replacement desired configuration after each collector checks in through OpAMP. The old configuration set remains on the Configuration Sets tab and is no longer assigned to collectors.

Use the Deployment status column on the Configuration Sets tab to monitor deployment of the replacement configuration set.
