Custom visualizations

Add and manage custom visualizations in Dashboard Studio, including building or installing them, adding them to dashboards, and understanding key limitations and supported options.

You can add custom visualizations to your dashboard to support unique use cases and data sets. Dashboard Studio supports the following types of custom visualizations:

Custom visualization type Description
Custom visualizations for Dashboard Studio Custom visualizations built using the custom dashboard extension framework for Dashboard Studio, which offers increased flexibility, simplicity, and performance. These visualizations are specifically built for use in Dashboard Studio.
Custom visualizations for classic Simple XML dashboards Custom visualizations built using the framework for Simple XML dashboards. These visualizations are built for use in Simple XML dashboards but can also be added to a Dashboard Studio dashboard.
For both types of custom visualizations,you can build your own custom visualization or install a public custom visualization app from Splunkbase:

  • Build a custom visualization:

    • For building a custom visualization using the framework for Dashboard Studio, see Custom visualizations for Dashboard Studio. For new custom visualizations, use the Dashboard Studio framework.

    • Using the framework for Simple XML dashboards is not recommended for building a new custom visualization for Dashboard Studio.

  • To install an existing public custom visualization from Splunkbase, see Install apps on your Splunk Cloud Platform deployment.

Once you have built or installed your custom visualization, add it to a dashboard in one of the following ways:

  • From the Add chart dropdown while editing a dashboard

  • Saved as a dashboard panel from Search. This option is only available for custom visualizations for classic Simple XML dashboards.

Limitations

  • Custom visualizations don't support trellis layout.

  • To configure a custom visualization with an interaction, such as linking to another dashboard, configure the interaction using Add an interaction after adding the visualization to the dashboard.

  • Custom visualizations don't support scheduled email export.
