Monitor Applications with Combined Agent
This includes the information about the combined agent.
The Combined Agent is a unified package that integrates the AppDynamics APM Agent and the Splunk Observability Cloud APM Agent. This solution allows you to streamline your monitoring workflow by providing the tools necessary to send telemetry data to both AppDynamics and Splunk Observability Cloud from a single deployment.
The Combined Agent provides flexible visualization of application performance data based on specific operational requirements.
Supported Combined Agents
Currently, the Java Agent is the only bundled solution, integrating both the Splunk Distribution of OpenTelemetry Java and the AppDynamics Java Agent. See Enable Dual Signal Mode.
Dual Signal Mode Monitoring
The Combined Agent supports a dual signal mode configuration. This allows you to leverage both the monitoring solutions simultaneously or switch between them as needed by configuring the respective agent settings.
View Metrics in AppDynamics
To monitor your application performance within the AppDynamics Controller, you must enable and configure the AppDynamics APM Agent settings. Once configured, the agent captures and transmits performance metrics, snapshots, and transaction data directly to your AppDynamics Controller.
For detailed configuration steps, see the specific language agent documentation (Java, Node.js).
View Data in Splunk Observability Cloud
To analyze your APM data within Splunk Observability Cloud, you must configure the APM agents for Splunk Observability Cloud. This allows the Splunk Observability Cloud component of the Combined Agent to send spans and traces to the Splunk Dashboard. To set up and configure the agents in Splunk Observability Cloud, refer to the Instrument back-end applications to send spans to Splunk APM documentation.
Supported Monitoring Scenarios
-
Unified Monitoring: Use the Combined Agent in dual signal mode to compare insights across both platforms.
-
Targeted Monitoring: Enable only the AppDynamics APM component to utilize the deep diagnostic capabilities of the AppDynamics Controller.
-
Cloud-Native Observability: Enable only the Splunk Observability Cloud APM component to leverage high-cardinality analytics and real-time streaming within Splunk.
You can adjust these settings at any time to align with your observability strategy.
