A business journey provides a visual representation of the steps users take to complete a specific business objective. Create journeys using automatic discovery or manually create a journey to maintain more precise control over each event. Business journeys use data from Splunk APM and Splunk RUM to visualize and optimize your business processes.
Automatically discover a business journey
Automatic business journey creation allows you to generate a journey map by describing your business intent. The system analyzes your data patterns to suggest the most relevant journey steps.
- Navigate to the Business Journeys page.
- Click Create business journey.
- Select Auto-Discover Business Journey.
-
Enter the following fields:
-
Environment: The environment to filter for relevant events
-
APM Service/RUM Application: The specific service or application to track in the business journey (for example,
AddtoCart) -
Correlation ID: The primary key for the event (for example,
cartId). The system uses this key to correlate events across different milestones and data sources (APM, RUM).
-
-
Select Auto Discover.
From the Business Journeys page, select View from the notification that appears after your business journey is generated. Based on your input, correlation IDs that match across business workflows are consolidated into a journey with milestones.
Create a journey manually
Manually create a journey when you have a well-defined business process and need to map specific events to defined outcomes.
- Navigate to the Business Journeys page.
- Click Create business journey.
- Select Create Business Journey Manually.
- Enter the following fields:
-
Environment: The environment to filter for relevant events
-
-
Add a milestone.
Business journey states
A business journey has a state field that controls whether it's actively processing events:
-
Enabled— The journey is active; incoming traces/spans are matched against its milestone configuration and journey events are produced in near real-time. -
The config also includes a
modefield (e.g.,Regular) that determines the journey processing behavior.
Add transition ID
Add a transition ID after you create your business journey by selecting the Add Transition ID button. You can then connect to other business systems (for example, shipping logistics after order placement) using the transition ID.
Add custom metrics
You can define a single top-level business metric that's displayed in the Business Journey overview page.
-
Sum: for example, total revenue associated with the journey
- Average: for example, average order value
-
Count: for example, number of free users in the business flow
Define the specific milestone and event to calculate, and select Done.
