Create a user journey map
Use user journey maps to visualize, analyze, and optimize the end-to-end paths users take within your application.
Use user journey maps to visualize user flows through an interactive Sankey diagram and discover behavioral patterns, identify friction points, and understand where users drop off or succeed.
Use cases for user journey maps
- Identify most common journeys: Quickly see the most frequent paths users take through your application to understand typical behavior.
- Analyze progression from a specific point: See where users go after visiting a page, screen, or feature to understand its impact on later actions.
- Analyze paths leading to an endpoint: Identify the steps users take before reaching a page, screen, or conversion event to optimize the desired flow.
Create a user journey map analysis
Follow these steps to create a new journey map.
-
From the Digital Experience Analytics Overview page, select the Analyses tab.
-
Select New analysis and select the Journey map option.
-
Enter a Name and a Description for your journey map. Select a time range in the Definition section.
-
(Optional) Select a User segment to filter the journey map to a specific group of users.
-
Define the parameters of your journey map:
-
Journey direction: Select Starts from to trace paths starting from a specific point, or Ends at to trace paths ending at a specific point.
-
Custom start or end point: Toggle on to start or end journey at a specific events in the journey.
-
-
Define the steps of your journey map:
- You can select all or specific pages pages (URL groups) and screens, as well as event definitions.
-
Remove subdomain:, Optional: ignore subdomains for Page node types..
-
Define the path for your user journey:
- Length: Select the number of steps (nodes) to display in the journey. You can select between 3 and 7 steps.
-
Show drop-offs:
- Minor paths: By default, the journey map hides minor paths that account for less than 5% of total visits to reduce visual noise. You can toggle this off or adjust the threshold if you want to see all low-traffic paths.
-
Preview your journey map in the Preview panel.
-
Select Save to generate the journey map.
Analyze user journey map
After saving or opening an existing journey map from the Analyses library, you can interact with the Sankey diagram using the following actions:
- View metrics
- Hover over any node or flow (the link between nodes) to see the number of unique users, total sessions, and the transition percentage.
- Identify drop-offs
- Look for paths that end abruptly or nodes with a high drop-off rate to identify potential areas of friction in the user experience.
- Analyze a specific path
- Click on one or more nodes to select a specific path. The Analyze path panel appears below the diagram.
- View session replays
- In the Path Detail Analysis panel, you can view a curated list of up to 500 recent sessions for users who followed your selected path. Click on a session to open the session replay and see exactly what the user experienced.
- Create a funnel
- If you find a specific path that you want to monitor closely for conversion, click Create Funnel in the detail panel. This opens a new funnel analysis with the steps from your selected path automatically pre-filled.
