Monitor the status and top issues of your Kubernetes environment

Use the Kubernetes overview page for a high-level understanding of your Kubernetes environment.

Monitor the status and top issues of your Kubernetes environment with the Kubernetes overview page.

Use the Kubernetes overview page to:

  • Understand the count and percentage of entity types in your environment.

  • Monitor the status of the nodes and pods in your environment at a glance.

  • View the top issues for your Kubernetes entities over time.

Prerequisites

To monitor Kubernetes instances with the Kubernetes overview page, you must meet the following requirements.

  • You have configured data collection from Kubernetes. For instructions, see Collect Kubernetes data.
    Note:

This feature requires the metrics and dimensions collected by default with the Collector for Kubernetes. For more information, see Collected metrics and dimensions for Kubernetes.

  • You have a user role with the following permissions:

    • READ_NAVIGATOR: Required for viewing navigator data.

    • EXECUTE_SIGNAL_FLOW: Required for running SignalFlow API calls.

    • READ_ALERT: Required for viewing alerts. Without this permission, the page will still load but inline alerts will not be visible.

Access the Kubernetes overview page

To access the Kubernetes overview page, you must first opt in to the new Kubernetes experience:
  1. In the Splunk Observability Cloud main menu, select Infrastructure > Kubernetes.

  2. Select a Kubernetes navigator.

  3. Use one of the following methods to opt in to the new experience.

    1. Select Switch now from the banner displayed on the aggregate view for the navigator.

    2. Select a Kubernetes instance name. In the displayed banner, select Switch to new experience.

After you opt in to the new Kubernetes experience, you can access the page by using the Splunk Observability Cloud main menu to select Infrastructure > Kubernetes overview.

Monitor the status of your Kubernetes environment

On the Kubernetes overview page, the Inventory section displays panels that you can use to understand the composition and status of your Kubernetes environment.

The following table describes the Inventory panels and how you can use them.

Panel name Use this panel to
Clusters

View the number of clusters in your environment.

Select the panel to navigate to the Kubernetes entities page with the Clusters entity type selected.

Namespaces

View the number of namespaces in your environment.

Select the panel to navigate to the Kubernetes entities page with the Namespaces entity type selected.

Workloads

View the percentage of workload types that make up your environment.

Hover over a segment in the pie chart to view the count of a type.

Nodes

View the percentage of nodes in Ready, Not Ready, and Unknown status.

Hover over a segment in the pie chart to view the count of the status.

Pods

View the percentage of pods in various statuses. Hover over a segment in the pie chart to view the count of the status.

For more information on pod statuses, see Monitor Kubernetes pod statuses.

Monitor the top issues in your Kubernetes environment

On the Kubernetes overview page, the Top issues section displays tabs that you can use to identify issues with your Kubernetes environment.

The following table describes the Top issues tabs and the threshold for each issue.

Issue name Threshold
Degraded deployments The deployment has fewer pods available than desired pods.
Failed jobs The job completion status is Failed.
Degraded DaemonSets The DaemonSet isn't running on all desired nodes.
Degraded StatefulSets The StatefulSet doesn't have the desired number of running pods.
Degraded nodes The status of the node isn't Ready.
Each section includes a bar chart that displays the number of issues over time and a table that lists each instance with issues. In the table, select an instance name to display a flyout with details about the instance.
