Tag Management

The Tag Management page simplifies the tag management tasks and enables you to create, edit, and delete tags using a graphical user interface. You can either use this interface or use Custom Tag APIs to create tags.

You can view all the tags on the Tag Management page in the Controller UI. You can navigate using any of the following ways on the Controller UI to view the Tag Management page:

  • Home > Tag Management

  • <user profile> > Tag Management
Note: The Administration Console is managed by Splunk AppDynamics. Contact Splunk AppDynamics Support to update the settings.
Before you enable the tag management review the guidelines for tags.

On the Tag Management page, you can:

View Tags

The Tag management page shows a list of all tags and their associations with nodes and application servers. The list view includes the following details:

The list of all the tags that you have created using Agents, Custom Tag API, or Controller.

Applied o Entity Types

Type of entities a tag is associated with. The entities are application, tier, node, business transaction, and server. It also display the number of number of each entity associated with a tag.

Source

The origin of the tag. These can be, Agent, API, or UI.

Tagged Entities

The total number of tagged entities. For example, the Tagged Entities will have the value as 22 when tags are applied to 12 applications and 10 servers.

Actions

Edit and delete actions are available.

When you delete a tag, all entities associated with it are untagged. The tag will be permanently removed from the system during the next purge cycle.

To view details of a tag, click the required tag. The details view displays the hierarchical view of the entities. Only the entity types associated with the selected tag will be marked with a tick , indicating their association. The details view includes the following information:

  • Application, Tiers & Nodes: This displays the hierarchical view of the application that is associated with the selected tag. If a tag is associated to five nodes in two different applications, you can view those nodes by navigating to the specific value under Applications > Tiers > Nodes. The details are displayed in hierarchical view, so selecting an application displays the associated tiers, and selecting the specific tier displays the associated nodes. You can also search for specific application, tier, or node using the ajax search.

  • Applications & Business Transactions: This displays the hierarchical view of the application that is associated with the selected tag. If a tag is associated to five business transactions in two different applications, you can view those Business Transactions by navigating to the specific value under Applications. The details are displayed in hierarchical view, so selecting an application displays the associated Business Transactions. You can also search for specific application, or Business Transaction using the ajax search.

  • Servers: Lists all the servers that are associated with the selected tag. You can also search for specific server using the ajax search.

Create Tags

To create a tag:
  1. Navigate to the Admin > Tag Management page in the Controller UI. You can also access the Tag Management page from the left navigation pane.
  2. Note: Review the guidelines for tags to understand how to define the key-value pairs and other limits related to tags.
    Click + Create tags.
  3. In the Add Tags section, specify the key-value information for the tag. You can add multiple tags using + Add.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Note: Tag Management operates based on an entity hierarchy. To configure tags, you must first select an application. Once the application is chosen, you can proceed to add its associated tiers, followed by the corresponding nodes within each tier. After including the necessary entities, you can refine the selection by deselecting any entities that do not need to be linked to the tag.
    Perform the following steps to associate entities with tag. You can associate one or all available entities to a tag:
    1. (Optional) In the Applications, Tiers and Nodes section, click Add to associate an application with the tag. Similarly, you can associate tiers and nodes to the tag. You can choose to remove the application later, keeping only tiers and nodes associated.
    2. (Optional) In the Applications & Business Transactions section, click Add to associate an application with the tag. Similarly, you can associate business transactions to the tag. You can remove the application later, keeping only business transactions associated.
    3. (Optional) In the Servers section, click Add to associate a server with the tag.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Click Go to inventory list to navigate to the Tag Management page.

Edit Tags

The existing tags can be edited by changing the value of the key, and associations can be removed or added for different entities.

Perform the following on the Tag Management page to edit a tag:
  1. Click Edit under Actions.
  2. (Optional)To change the value, perform the following:
    1. Modify the value in the Value field. You cannot change the Key name.
    2. Click Save. The changes are updated as soon as the value is saved. The old value will show on the inventory list before it is purged, but will not be associated with any entity.
    3. (Optional) Click Next to edit the associated entities.
  3. (Optional) To change the associated entities, you can perform any or all of the following:
    • To associate a new entity, use the Add option for each entity. For more information about adding the entities, see Create Tags.

    • To remove the association with specific entity, deselect the entity or entities.

  4. Click Save.

Delete Tags

To delete a tag, click Delete under Actions, then confirm with OK. This deletes the tag and all the entity associations. You can view the deleted tag in the inventory list for 24 hours before it gets purged. You can edit the tag if you require to use it again. However, this can be done within 24 hours.
