Analyze business transaction performance with the business transaction view

Learn how to use the business transaction view in Splunk APM to analyze business transaction performance.

After you configure business transaction rules, you can use the business transaction view to monitor the performance of business operations and troubleshoot issues with the services in your application environment that deliver your business operations.

The business transaction view can help you answer questions such as:

  • Is my business transaction performing as expected, or is there an atypical amount of errors or high latency?

  • What services are involved in my business transaction?

  • How does the performance of individual services contribute to the overall performance of the business transaction?

  • How can I directly access traces and call graphs related to my business transaction?

Filter data based on environment

The service map in the business transaction view visualizes the services that deliver the business transaction. In this service map, you can:

  • Select a service node once to overlay the data for that service on the Business transaction metrics charts. Use this functionality to compare the performance of the service against the performance of the entire business transaction.

  • Select a service node twice to navigate to the service view for that service.

Monitor business transaction performance

Use the Business transaction metrics charts to monitor the performance of your business transaction. This section displays request, error, and latency (RED) metrics.

Compare service and business transaction performance

Select the Overlay service data drop-down menu and select a service to overlay the data for that service on the Business transaction metrics charts. Use this functionality to compare the performance of the service against the performance of the entire business transaction.

After you select a service, you can select Go to service view to navigate to the service view for that service.
