Interpret SSL test results
Every run of an SSL test in Splunk Synthetic Monitoring produces a set of diagnostics that help you understand the performance of your application in real time.
View Synthetics tests
On the page, you can view a customizable summary of recent run results to assess the performance of your test at a glance. You can sort the results, search for tests, or add filters to narrow down results.
Filter SSL tests
-
Navigate to .
-
From the Test types dropdown, select SSL.
-
You will see a list of existing SSL tests that can be sorted or filtered.
Take actions on SSL tests
Select an option from the Three-dot dropdown next an SSL test:
-
Edit test to edit your test configuration.
-
to pause your test.
-
to run your test immediately.
-
Create detector to create a CA certificate-level detector.
-
Copy test to make a copy of your test. This opens the New SSL test page with the details of the test pre-filled.
-
Test info to view test details such as the name, creation and update times, and detectors.
-
Detector test to delete the test.
View SSL test results and metrics
From your filtered list of SSL tests, you can select a test to view visualized results over time, an availability chart, as well as performance KPIs. In addition, below the Availability and Performance KPIs tabs, you can also directly select a row corresponding to an SSL test in the Recent run results table.
Select a data point in the Performance KPIs chart to drill down into a smaller time frame to examine more closely or add Location segmentations.
Customize the Performance KPIs chart
View results for a specific run
To navigate to the Run results view for one run, select a data point in the Performance KPIs chart with the visualization interval at Run level and the segmentation set to Location.
If you’re viewing aggregate data (for example, at a 20-minute interval instead of run level), selecting a data point zooms you in to see run-level detail. Then you can select a specific run to see the Run results from there.
View recent and all run results
You can also directly select a row corresponding to an SSL test in the Recent run results table below the Performance KPIs chart to access its individual run details.
To see a list of all the test results, select . This will show you detailed certificate chain information, validation outcomes, and SSL-specific metrics.
Run results timeline
The Run results for SSL tests has several components that show the successful and failed validations, the certificate and issuer in a preview and source view, and the request information under the timeline that highlights request events during the test.
| UI Component | Information |
|---|---|
| Heading |
Shows you whether the test was successful, the location where the test was executed, the test duration, and the test status (Scheduled/Disabled). |
| Timeline | Plots the request events over the duration of the test. |
| Validations | Displays the assertions that were executed during the test and whether the test was successful or failed. |
| Certificate | Provides certificate details as an interactive tree with the ability to expand or collapse sections. You can view a Preview of the response or the Source that shows JSON in plain text. |
| Issuer | Similar to Certificate but provides the issuer details instead, enabling you to view more or less detail by expanding or collapsing the interactive tree. You can view a Preview of the response or the Source that shows JSON in plain text. |
| Request information | Shows the requested host, port, DNS time duration, TCP connect time, TLS time, and the test duration. |

Metrics for SSL tests
Every run of an SSL test produces a set of metrics depicting the state of your certificate. See SSL test metrics for a complete list of these metrics.
